Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy
REME recognises the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI tools in research and scholarly publishing. Such tools may support the research and publication process, but they do not replace human responsibility, expertise, and judgement.
Use of AI by Authors
AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. Authorship requires accountability for the submitted work, which cannot be attributed to an AI system.
Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and appropriate referencing of all content submitted to REME, including content created or modified with the assistance of AI tools.
The use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies that has materially contributed to the preparation of the manuscript should be transparently disclosed. The disclosure should identify the tool used and briefly describe how it was used.
Routine tools used solely for spelling, grammar, language improvement, formatting, reference management, or similar technical assistance do not normally require disclosure, provided that they do not generate or substantially modify the scientific content of the manuscript.
Authors must carefully verify AI-generated content, including facts, references, quotations, data interpretations, and other outputs. AI-generated references or citations must not be used without verification against the original sources.
AI tools must not be used to fabricate, falsify, manipulate, or misrepresent research data, results, images, citations, or other research content.
Where AI-generated or AI-assisted images, figures, or other visual materials are used, authors must ensure that their use complies with copyright, licensing, research integrity, and transparency requirements and should clearly disclose the use of AI where relevant.
Confidentiality and AI Tools
Authors must not upload confidential, personal, sensitive, copyrighted, or otherwise protected material to AI tools unless they have the appropriate rights and the tool provides adequate safeguards for the information concerned.
Use of AI by Reviewers
Manuscripts submitted for peer review are confidential documents.
Reviewers must not upload submitted manuscripts, figures, tables, supplementary materials, or substantial parts of them to publicly available generative AI tools or other services where confidentiality and data protection cannot be ensured.
AI tools must not replace the reviewer's own critical assessment and scientific judgement. Reviewers remain fully responsible for the content and quality of their reviews.
Use of AI by Editors
Editors must protect the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and must not upload unpublished manuscript content or confidential peer-review information to publicly available generative AI tools where confidentiality cannot be ensured.
AI-assisted tools may support administrative or editorial processes where appropriate safeguards are in place, but final editorial decisions must always be made by human editors.
Responsibility and Transparency
The use of AI does not transfer responsibility from authors, reviewers, or editors to the technology provider. All parties involved in the publication process remain accountable for their respective contributions and decisions.
REME may request additional information concerning the use of AI tools where this is necessary to assess transparency, research integrity, confidentiality, or compliance with the journal's editorial policies.
