Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published and is not under consideration by another journal.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word or another editable format accepted by the journal.
  • The text follows the journal’s Author Guidelines, including formatting, citation style, and bibliographic requirements.
  • All illustrations, photographs, drawings, maps, tables, and other visual materials are properly described, numbered, and cited in the text.
  • The author has obtained permission to use any third-party materials included in the submission, where such permission is required.
  • The submission includes all required metadata, including title, abstract, keywords, author affiliations, funding information where applicable, and references.
  • The references are complete and formatted according to the journal’s required citation style.
  • All co-authors have approved the submission and agree to its submission to the journal.

SCOPE
The journal accepts original, previously unpublished scholarly articles concerning:

  • Modernist architecture and urban planning
  • Protection, conservation, and management of modernist heritage
  • History of twentieth-century architecture
  • Theory and practice of heritage conservation
  • Research on European and global modernism
  • Submitted manuscripts must not be under consideration by any other journal or publisher at the same time.

PUBLICATION LANGUAGE

Articles are accepted in English (British English). Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to submit manuscripts that a professional translator or translation agency has proofread.
The author is responsible for the linguistic, stylistic, and scholarly quality of the text.

ARTICLE LENGTH

  • Maximum article length: 40,000 characters (with spaces)
  • Minimum article length: 10,000 characters (with spaces)
  • Abstract: up to 300 words
  • Keywords: 3-5
  • Author biography: up to 100 words

The character count includes footnotes, bibliography, and figure captions.

ARTICLE STRUCTURE

The first page should include:

  • Article title in English
  • Subtitle, if applicable
  • Author(s)’ full name(s)
  • Institutional affiliation(s)
  • ORCID number(s)
  • Correspondence e-mail address(es)
  • Abstract
  • Keywords
  • Author biography

The main text should be structured as follows:

1. Introduction

The introduction should clearly define the research context and explain the topic’s significance for studies of architecture, urban planning, and modernist heritage.

The author should:

  • Present the topic and its relevance
  • Outline the current state of research
  • Identify a research gap or an issue requiring reinterpretation
  • State the main objective of the article
  • Define the research questions or hypotheses
  • Describe the methodology and the types of sources used
  • For studies based on archival materials, a brief description of the nature and scope of the archival resources is recommended.

2. Main body

The main body should present the research findings logically and transparently. It should be divided into subsections corresponding to the successive parts of the article.

Depending on the nature of the study, the main body may include:

Historical Background and Context
This section may include:

  • Origins of the analysed building, urban complex, or phenomenon
  • Social, political, economic, and cultural conditions
  • Position of the analysed case within a broader European or international context

Analysis of Research Material
This section may include:

  • Architectural analysis
  • Urban planning analysis
  • Analysis of archival sources
  • Comparative analysis
  • Conservation or management analysis

Discussion of Results
The author should relate their findings to:

  • Previous research findings
  • Current scholarly debates
  • Theories concerning modernism, heritage conservation, or architectural history

3. Conclusions / Summary

Acknowledgements are optional.

Files should be submitted in one of the following formats:

  • DOC
  • DOCX

2. Page layout

  • A4 page size
  • Margins: 2.5 cm
  • Line spacing: 1.5
  • Page numbering required

3. Font

  • Title: Arial Bold, 24 pt
  • Subtitle: Arial Bold, 16 pt
  • Author information: Arial, 10 pt
  • Main text: Arial, 10 pt
  • Headings: Arial Bold, 10 pt, capitals
  • Footnotes: Arial, 8 pt

4. Illustrations
Graphic materials must be submitted as separate files.

Accepted Formats:

  • PNG
  • JPG
  • TIFF

Technical Requirements:

  • Minimum resolution: 300 dpi
  • Numbering must correspond to the order of appearance in the text: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc.
  • Files should be submitted as a single .zip archive
  • Each file name should correspond to the illustration number
  • The manuscript should indicate where each illustration should be placed

5. Figure Captions
Each caption should include:

  • Figure number placed below the illustration: e.g., Fig. 1, Fig. 2
  • Title or description
  • Location, if applicable
  • Photographer’s name and date of photograph
  • Source

The author is responsible for obtaining permission to publish materials protected by copyright.

6. Tables
Each table caption should include:

  • Table number placed above the table: e.g., Table 1, Table 2
  • Title or concise description of contents
  • Source

CITATIONS AND BIBLIOGRAPHY

The APA 7 citation style is obligatory.

1. Bibliography
The bibliography should appear at the end of the manuscript and be arranged alphabetically by
authors’ surnames.
Every bibliographic entry should be cited in the text in the form of a footnote.

2. Footnotes
Footnotes should be used for comments and substantive additions rather than for bibliographic
references alone.
Where footnotes contain only bibliographic references, they should follow APA 7 style, as described above.

3. Abbreviations and symbols
Standardised abbreviations and symbols should be used.

The full form of each abbreviation or symbol should be given at its first occurrence in the text.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

1. Peer Review Procedure
All articles are subject to editorial assessment and peer review.

For review purposes, authors must provide an anonymous version of the manuscript with all identifying information removed. Articles must remain anonymous to reviewers; therefore, any information that could identify the author(s) in the main text, footnotes, or bibliography must be removed.

2. Ethical Standards
Authors are required to adhere to principles of academic integrity, including:

  • preventing plagiarism
  • disclosing co-authorship
  • avoiding ghostwriting and guest authorship
  • properly citing all sources of materials used
  • disclosing the use of artificial intelligence, specifying the exact scope of its use

3. Submission Package
The submission should include:

  • article in DOC/DOCX format
  • anonymous version of the article in DOC/DOCX format for peer review
  • illustrative materials in PNG, JPG, or TIFF format
  • figure captions
  • author biography
  • declaration confirming the originality of the manuscript and ownership of rights to all submitted materials

Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), which permits use, distribution, reproduction, and adaptation in any medium, provided that the original author(s), source, and license are properly credited.

By submitting a manuscript, authors confirm that the work is original, has not been previously published, and is not under consideration elsewhere.
